The farthest corners of Haiti

Haiti is a small country that covers half of the island Haiti in the Caribbean Sea and is also the most mountainous area in the Caribbean. In 1492, the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus. The island under the name of Hispaniola became part of the colonial empire of Spain. In the course of the XVI, the indigenous population was almost completely destroyed and the western part of the island had been penetrated by french pirates. In the XVIII french colonial administration flourished with sugarcane, coffee, cotton and indigo crops. Slaves from Africa were brought to work, who at the end of the century made the majority of the population. Today, descendants of African slaves make 95% of Haiti's population.

Haiti is quite an unusual country, one could say mysterious. It is strange and shocking at the same time that only 53% of people can read and write and over 40% of population is under the age of 14. The people of Haiti do not have an easy life, unfair labor practices are common in this country and most of people are working illegally. It is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, the average Haitian earns less than $4 a day and only 10% of all Haitian children can go to elementary school and high school. The sad information is that 1 in 5 people on Haiti have hiv or aids.

Port au Prince is the capital and the most important city, inhabitants are about 20% of all of the people of Haiti. The capital is Haiti's economic center as it is an export hub. Coffee and sugar are most frequently exported. Food processing is also common in Port au Prince. Life in the countryside is much more difficult. Rural areas receive less recovery aid after natural disasters and have less access to basic necessities, show higher poverty rates than in the city.

Cockfighting is the national sport in Haiti, and you can find a lot of videos on the internet. Many people find this use of animals unethical.
